Political Rivalry in Mexico City: Lozano vs. Arias

Political rivalry in Mexico City intensifies between Mayor Janecarlo Lozano and Nora Arias's group. A former ally has become a foe, and as the 2027 elections approach, the struggle for influence in the capital heats up.

Political Rivalry in Mexico City: Lozano vs. Arias

Political rivalry is intensifying in Mexico City. The first development was the endorsement from remaining national leaders of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) for the leadership of Mexico City, represented by Deputy Nora Arias. The states of Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Zacatecas, Oaxaca, and Hidalgo backed the perredista leader in the nation's capital, who has transitioned from a historical ally to a new enemy of Lozano Reynoso. Lozano, for his part, has urged 'Los Chuchos' not to submit to Arias. Lozano continues to rival the group of Nora Arias and Víctor Hugo Lobo, even after leaving the 'Sol Azteca' party in 2021 to join the Morenism of Claudia Sheinbaum. Lozano had bet on Omar García Harfuch for the 2024 Morena internal election in the capital, and Clara Brugada's group has not forgiven him and views him with suspicion, especially when it comes to allocating resources. Two events in recent weeks have raised the concern of Mayor Janecarlo Lozano. This is where Cravioto has an opportunity to gain control of the demarcation. To become mayor of Gustavo A. Madero, he had to override the interests of then-mayor and current Senator Francisco Chíguil, as well as the work of César Cravioto's operators. Cravioto Romero does not neglect the GAM despite his responsibilities in the central government, a fact that also worries Janecarlo. His interest lies in the territory, where the PRD group still operates and where Morena groups are also challenging Lozano. With an eye on the 2027 internal election, the Secretary of Government for Clara Brugada is playing his cards in the demarcation. Brugada confirmed that Pablo Yánez will replace Encinas at the Secretariat of Metropolis. Lozano had expected a friend to take over the Secretariat of Planning, Territorial Ordering, and Metropolitan Coordination after Alejandro Encinas moved to Washington as the new representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). Instead of Encinas, the Government of Mexico City appointed Pablo Yanes, an ally of Cravioto, who will be in charge of coordinating with the municipalities of the State of Mexico, including those bordering the GAM: Tlalnepantla and Ecatepec.
